What is Psycho-Social Oncology?


On the diagnosis of a cancer you may have heard the following terms “Psychosocial, Psych Oncology or Psychosocial Oncology” and wondered what does that mean and does it apply to you?  These terms look specifically at the psychological and social wellbeing of the individual and there significant others who have been effected by a cancer diagnosis. It goes beyond medical treatment and concentrates on understanding and treating the, social, psychological, spiritual, emotional aspects of cancer right through all stages of the illness. There are many health professionals who work as part of a Psychosocialoncology team (i.e. social workers, psychiatrists, psychologists and nurses). They all have one common goal, to lessen the social and psychological burned of the cancer diagnosis.
